      1224.   ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  Destructive Hydrogenation.  British Patent 277,273, Mar. 13, 1926.  Chem. Age, vol. 17, 1927, p. 352; Chem. Zentralb., 1928, I, p. 616; Chem. Abs., vol. 22, 1928, p. 2456.

In producing liquid hydrocarbons by destructive hydrogenation of coal, tars, mineral oils, and like materials, both the hot and cold parts of the apparatus are made of metal not reacting with CO, as described in British Patent 247,217 (abs. 1144) and British Patent 249,155 (abs. 1314).  For the cooler portions of the apparatus, metals of relatively low melting point may be used such as Sn, Zu, Cd, Pb, or their alloys for the hotter portions, Cu, Ag, Al alloys, Cr, Mn, V, U or steel, or alloys of Ni or Co may be used containing about 20% of more Mn, Ti, Cr, V, W, or Mo.  Reducing gases other than those containing H2 and CO may be used in the process.
