      1216.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  Cracking Hydrocarbons Such as Methane.  British Patent 264,845, Jan. 20, 1926.  Chem. Abs., vol. 22, 1928, p. 242.

Cracking of CH4 to produce C2H2 or cracking of other gaseous or vaporous saturated hydrocarbons is effected by passage, alone or diluted with other gases, through a thin zone of high temperature, which extends across substantially the whole cross-sectional area of a tube, as in a special apparatus described.  The reaction products may be directly subjected to other chemical treatment to produce other products such as H6H6 or AcH.  Residual gases containing H2 and CO may be converted catalytically into CH4, which may be used to continue the process.  A W wire gauze carrying platinized asbestos in a this layer may be used as a catalyst, or a highly porous refractory material such as “Marquardt composition” may be used as a catalyst.
