      1214.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  [Cracking Catalysts.]  Belgian Patent 429,626, Aug. 9, 1938.  Chem. Zentralb. 1939, II, p. 2490.

The solution of 1 or more salts of the elements in groups 3 or 4 of the periodic system capable of forming gels is mixed with 1 or more metal salts and the mixture allowed to stand and form a gel.  The gel is separated by heating or by precipitation, dried and heated to about 400°-800°, if desired, in presence of reducing gases.  In this way catalysts are formed consisting of Si and Mg and Al and Mg together with compounds of Zu, Su, Ti, V, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Ni, or Co.  The catalysts yield by the cracking of hydrocarbon oils from pressure hydrogenation only small amounts of gaseous products and can be regenerated without harm by heating to 800°.  They are suitable also for cracking oils rich in H, such as those from the water-gas synthesis.
