      1213.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  Cracking and Refining Oils.  British Patent 504,614, Apr. 24, 1939.  Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 8002.

In the production of hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon oils by cracking, hydrogenation, refining, or desulfurization of carbonaceous material in the presence of catalysts, the catalysts comprise products obtained by mixing a solution of 1 or more salts of elements of the 3d and 4th groups of the periodic system, capable of forming mineral gels, with 1 or more metal salts, preferably in solution, precipitating the gel and separating and dryin it by heat.  In a modification, the metal salts or solutions are mixed with the precipitated gel while still moist.  The gel may be precipitated by standing, by heating, or by the use of precipitants.  Precipitants for the metal radical may be added also, preferably after the gel precipitant.  The catalyst may be prepared in the presence of bleaching earths, bauxite, etc,. and my be mixed with carbonaceous material., such as, graphite and lignite small coke, shaped and heated to about 500°-600°.  H3BO3 may be added.  In cracking and hydrogenation processes, formation of gaseous products may be reduced by using the salt of a trivalent metal, for example, FeCl3, and dissolving out of the metal compound.  Among examples, middle oils are treated at 460° and atmospheric pressure with a catalyst comprising precipitated SiO2 pasted with Al(NO3)3, or worked up with a solution of Al(NO3)3 before filtering.
