      1173.  ------.[I. G. Farbenindustrie, A. G. Alcohols]  Catalysts and Catalytic Reactions.  British Patent 379,335, Aug. 26, 1932.  Chem. Abs., vol. 27, 1933, p. 4041.

Catalysts suitable for destructive hydrogenation of coals, tars, and mineral oils; cracking of liquid carbonaceous materials; purification of gases by treatment with H2; preparation of MeOH or hydrocarbons from CO and H2; preparation of MeOH or hydrocarbons from CO and H2; purification, especially desulfurization, of carbonaceous materials with H2; preparation of H2S from H2 and S; hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons; and preparation of H2 or polymerization products from the waste gases from destructive hydrogenation or cracking processes comprise metal sulfides (except of Fe), which are prepared from metals, especially from groups 5 and 6 of the periodic system, or their compounds under vigorously sulfidizing conditions, such as treatment with liquid or vaporous S or volatile compounds containing bivalent S, for example: H2S, PhSH, mercaptans, CS2, AcSII under conditions allowing an intensive reaction or by the thermal decomposition of the salts, preferably with the exclusion of substances having an oxidizing effect during and after the preparation.  Sulfides, such as commercial sulfides, oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, nitrates, chlorides, nitrides, or phosphides, may be treated.  Gives details of the many methods of preparation.
