      1146.  ------.[I. G. Farbenindustrie, A. G. Alcohols]  Benzene Synthesis.  British Patent 297,179, July 13, 1927.  Chem. Abs., vol. 23, 1929, p. 2448.

C6H6 and its homologs are produced by treating mixtures of C oxide and H2 at a temperature >300º with a catalyst comprising Fe and then heating the resulting olefins and CH4 hydrocarbons to 600º-800º with or without a catalyst.  A noble metal is preferably used with Fe in the 1st stage and, in the 2d stage, substances that would cause deposition of C are avoided.  Cu, Sn, Zn, or Cr may be used to line the apparatus or as catalysts.
