Catalyst is contained in a plurality of tubes closely packed together to form a bundle and the interspaces between the tubes are so restricted relative to the cross section of the tubes and to the density of the catalyst within the tubes that the incoming gas, which passes first on the outside of the tubes, travels at a higher velocity than it does within the tubes.
