Mixture, consisting chiefly of alcohols obtained by the catalytic reduction of CO with H2, especially at medium pressure and over catalysts of the Fe group, preferably Fe, and at synthesis temperature <250°, is especially suitable for preventing the foaming of liquids.  Particular uses are in the evaporation of sugar and salt solutions in washing out of CO residues from H2 with ammoniacal Cu salt solutions.
