      1131.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids.  British Patent 497,170, Dec. 14, 1938.  Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 3397.

Acids are obtained by treating the saponified oxidation products of high-molecular aliphatic compounds with SO2 or soluble bisulfites in the presence of H2O.  In examples, the saponified oxidation product of paraffin is treated with SO2 and NaHSO3, respectively; the saponified oxidation product of a paraffin obtained from CO and H2 is treated with NaHSO3; and a solid Ca soap of the oxidation product of hard paraffin that contains 70% H2O is treated with a gas containing 6% SO2.
