The method of German Patent 512,718 (abs. 1088), for oxygenating aliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbons by the action thereon of CO under pressure is modified by carrying out the process in the presence of anhydrous AlBr3, BF3, ZnCl2, FeCl3, TiCl4, SnCl4, or SbCl3 instead of anhydrous AlCl3.
