      1086.  HOOG, H., ENGEL, W. F., AND KOOME, J. (Shell Development Co.).  Catalytic Refining of Hydro-Carbon Alcohols.  United States Patent 2,525,354.  Oct. 10, 1950: appl. filed Dec. 17, 1948; 9 claims (Cl. 260-643).  Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 2014.

Crude synthetic alcohols contaminated with aldehydic and olefinic impurities (as obtained by the Oxo process) are refined by catalytic vaporphase hydrogenation at 80º-200º with stationary beds of a solid Ni silicate catalyst.  Such a catalyst is prepared as follows: To a boiling solution of 420 gm, Na2CO8 (4.5 1.) is added Na metasilicate solution containing 56 gm. SiO2 (0.5 l.) and then a boiling Ni(NO3)2 solution containing 200 gm. Ni (5 l.).  The precipitate is filtered, washed with 24 l. H2O at 90º, dried at 110º for 10 hr., pulverized, and sifted, and this powder (380 l.) with activated powdered Surinam bauxite (223 l.) and powdered graphite (6 l.) compressed into pellets and reduced with 200 l. H2 per hr. for 24 hr. at 275º-300º.
