1082------.  [HOLDER, C. H.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Reduction of Carbon Formation in Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  United States Patent 2,628,968, Feb. 17, 1953; appl. filed Sept. 20, 1948, Serial No. 51,984; 3 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

High yields unaccompanied by excessive C formation and catalyst disintegration is obtained by operating a hydrocarbon synthesis in 2 stages.  A catalyst of low activity is used in the first reactor, followed by a catalyst of relatively high activity in the second reactor operating at substantially higher pressure than the first reactor.  The feed from the first synthesis stage is converted to the extent of about 80% in the 2d zone, giving an overall conversion of about 95%.  It is possible to use a feed of relatively low H2 : CO ratio such as 1.5 : 1.  7 United States patents cited.
