      1076.  HOGAN, J. P. (Phillips Petroleum Co.).  Preconditioning Hydrocarbon-Synthesis Catalyst.  United States Patent 2,644,829, July 7, 1953.  Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 8995.

Describes process for eliminating the undesirably high initial activity of Fischer-Tropsch-type catalysts.  Fresh or regenerated catalyst is brought into contact with a mixture of H2 and CO at the desired reaction temperature, but at lower than normal pressure and space velocity.  The pressure and space velocity are then increased slowly over a period of 5-15 hr. to the desired reaction conditions, when the reaction may be continued as usual.  Thus a low reaction rate is maintained while the catalyst activity is high.
