1061.  ------ [HIRSCH, J. H.]  (Gulf Research & Development Co.).  Method and Apparatus for Conducting Chemical Reactions.  United States Patent 2,488,406, Nov. 15, 1949; appl. filed Nov. 25, 1947, Serial No. 787,884; 4 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

In the exothermic reactions such as synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2, the temperature is controlled by continuously removing a portion of the dense fluidized catalyst downward from the catalyst bed into a mixing zone, where it is diluted and made less dense by addition of more reactant gases.  The less dense stream is then passed upward through a cooling zone back into the reactor, where the dense catalyst bed is formed again.  13 United States patents cited.
