      1039.  HEROLD, P., KAUFMANN, H., AND WOERNER, A.  Manufacture of Hydrocarbons.  United States Patent 2,371,890, Mar. 20, 1945; appl. filed Nov. 14, 1940, in Germany Feb. 8, 1939.

            The preparation of a catalyst for the distinctive hydrogenation of solid and liquid carbonaceous materials (coal, tar, and mineral oils) or the production of hydrocarbon oils from mixture of CO and H2.  Bleaching earths are treated with an aqueous solution of salts of Mg, Al, Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni.  An example gives the composition of German bleaching earth.  The catalyst is especially well suited for use in reactions at temperatures of 200° or 300-700° C., under pressures of 10-500 atm.
