1034.  ------ [HERBST, W. A.] (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Synthesis of Hydrocarbons.  United States Patent 2,467,803; appl. filed Aug. 14, 1947, Serial No. 768,540; 8 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).  Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949, p. 6810.

To reduce C formation in a multistage conversion process, fresh synthesis gas is used with aged Fe catalyst to effect 60-90% of the CO conversion at moderately high conversion levels.  The unconverted reactants are contacted with relatively fresh Fe catalyst, <1,000 cu. ft. of CO converted per lb. of catalyst, at low conversion levels to complete the conversion.  Catalyst fines may be removed and oxygenated compounds withdrawn between stages.  7 United States patents cited.
