      1031.  HERBERT, W., SCHALL, A., AND GROSS, H. W. (Metallgesellschaft A. -G.). [Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Carbon Monoxide.]  German Patent 736,977, July 6, 1943; appl. filed July 24, 1938 (Cl. 12 o-1.03).  Chem. Abs., vol. 38, 1944, p. 3786.

Fe nitrate mixed with diatomaceous earth and small quantity of a metal that activates nitrates is heated.  Simultaneously air is passed in so that part of the N2 is driven off.  Then the Fe is reduced with gases containing H2 at a temperature < 300°.  The reduction is carried to such and extent the only 5-10% of the theoretically reducible Fe is actually reduced to the metallic state.
