      1028HERBERT, W., AND METALLGESELLCHAFT A. G.  [Hydrocarbon Synthesis.]  British Patent 507,366, June 14, 1939; appl. filed Apr. 25, 1938.  Chem. Abs., vol. 34, 1940, p. 614.

In the synthesis of hydrocarbons, mainly paraffinic and olefinic, from CO and H2 with catalysts known for the synthesis of benzine, oil, and solid paraffin and temperatures < those yielding only CH4 are used.  The gas throughout is kept >1 l. (calculated at normal pressure and temperature) per hr. per gm. of hydrogenating metal in the contact mass, and the reaction chamber or the pressure, or both, is made so large that the time of contact of the gas with the contact mass is > than 45 sec.  The temperature is so regulated that the heat generated, calculated as heat load per m.3 of cooling surface of the cooling members embedded in the contact mass, at the gas pressure of p atmosphere does not exceed 500 3p keal. per hr.  Recycling of gases after removal of reaction products increases the catalyst life and reduces the formation  of solid paraffin.  A Co-Th-kieselguhr catalyst may be prepared by precipitating a mixture of the metal nitrate solutions and kieselguhr with K2CO3, granulating and reducing.  It contains Co, 33%; ThO2 6%; and kieselguhr, 61%.  The contact chamber is divided into 2 stages.  Part of the reaction products are withdrawn immediately.  Gases containing H2, 2 vols. and CO, 1 vol. are caused to react at 180° and normal pressure.  The throughput is 1 l. per hr. per gm. of Co.  The time of stay is 36 sec. and the heat load per m.3 is 240 keal. per hr.
