      1010.  ------ [HERBERT, W].  (Metallgesellschaft A. G.).  [Conversion of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen into Mixtures of Hydrocarbons.]  German Patent 742,376.  Dec. 14, 1943; appl. M 139,535, filed Oct. 20, 1937 (Cl. 12 o-1.03).  FIAT Reel AA 88, frames, 3,727-3,729; PB 70,273; Chem. Abs., vol. 39, 1945, p. 2636.

Hydrocarbons of a paraffinic and olefinic nature are produced by treating CO and H2 under a pressure of 15 atm. or more in presence of a catalyst of Fe containing a promoter.  The catalyst is prepared by precipitation from a solution of Fe (NO3)3 and a small amount of Cu (NO3)3 by means of KOH and is then deposited on silica gel or kieselguhr as a carrier.  Na silicates act as activator.  After drying the catalyst it is reduced by H2 at 250°.  This catalyst will last for several months without loss of activity if made with silicate, but without this it loses its activity rapidly and tends to produce light fractions instead of paraffins.
