      994.  ------.  [HENKEL & CIE. G. M. B. H.]  Fatty Alcohols.  British Patent 489,863, Aug. 4, 1938.  Chem. Abs, vol. 33, 1939, p. 172.

Liquid-solid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained in the synthesis of benzine from CO and H2 is oxidized, and the fractions consisting of acids, esters, and lactones are reduced to alcohols.  The latter, which contain about 8-18 C atoms in the molecule, may be sulfonated.  O2, O3, N oxides, and CrO3 are suitable oxidizing agents and Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, Cr, Pb, V, or their salts, for example, soaps, may be used as catalysts.  Alkalies and alkaline earths also may be present.  Among examples, a synthetic benzine obtained by Franz Fischer’s process is oxidized with air in the presence of a Mn soap and, after separation of unoxidized material, the soap and, after separation of unoxidized material, the product is reduced with H2 and a Cu chromite catalyst.
