      980.  ------.  [HEMMINGER, C. E.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Pretreatment of Catalyst for Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  United States Patent 2,560,345, July 10, 1951; appl. filed Dec. 23, 1947, Serial No. 793,368; 4 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

Standard method of synthesizing hydrocarbons from CO and H2 in the presence of a fluidized Fe catalyst is improved by first reducing and O2-containing Fe catalyst with H2 to an O2 content of about 0.10 wt. % of the Fe, then treating the reduced catalyst with fresh synthesis gas, containing CO and H2 in the ratio of 1-2 mol. H2 per mol CO at a temperature 550º-750º F. and a H2 partial pressure of 100-150 p. s. i., for a time, 0.5-5 hr., sufficient to convert 25-50 wt. % of its Fe content into a mixture of Fe carbides, in which Fe2C predominates.  Such treatment results in less C deposition on the catalyst during synthesis and less disintegration.
