      972.  ------.  [HEMMINGER, C. E.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Gasification.  United States Patent 2,644,745, July 7, 1953.  Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 8996.

Finely divided carbonaceous solids are gasified continuously while suspended in the gaseous gasifying medium, such as steam or CO2, at temperatures above the fusion point of the ash.  The heat required to support the endothermic gasification reaction and to maintain the high reaction temperatures is generated by partial combustion of the carbonaceous charge with free O2.  Gasification temperatures of preferably 1,149º-1,371º and pressures ranging from atmospheric to about 400 p. s. i. are suitable for the gasification of most carbonaceous solids, such as coals, shale, and coke.  The particle size of the solids is preferably 20 to 100-mesh.  The suspension of the solids in the gas mixture containing O2 and steam or CO2 is admitted in suitable proportions at a relatively high velocity tangentially into the gasifier so as to impart a swirling motion to the suspension.
