      968.  HEMMINGER, C. E.  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Apparatus and Process for Circulating Powdered Solid in Chemical Treatment.  United States Patent 2,595,254, May 6, 1952.  Chem. Abs., vol. 46, 1952, p. 6876.

Describes process in which gaseous reactants are brought into contact with a powdered material in the reaction zone.  The reactant flow upward and maintain, in suspension, a solid in powdered form.  The powder acts as a heat absorbing or releasing medium and thus tends to maintain the reactants within a desired temperature range, which is optimum for the reaction in question.  This continuous process is adaptable to a wide range of vapor phase chemical reactions.  Gives examples, including hydrogenation of hydrocarbons, Fischer synthesis, and MeOH synthesis.
