      965.  ------.  [HEINRICH, R. L.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Synthetic Polyolefin Lubricants.  United States Patent 2,361,176, Mar. 10, 1953.  Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 7205.

Lubricants are produced by polymerization of a-olefins containing at least 4 C atoms in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (I) and an O-containing compound (an aliphatic alcohol, ketone, peroxide, aldehyde, or organic acid) containing <5% by weight of olefin.  The quantity of catalyst in the charge exceed that of the O-containing compound.  The reaction takes place at 75º-150º F. under a pressure sufficient to maintain the liquid phase.  In an example, a mixture of 1-decene 50 and C-H16 approximately 50 was treated with AlCl8 2 and MeOH 1 part by weight for 2 hr. at 100º F. to give a 73% yield of product having a viscosity of 2,598 at 100º F. and 232 Saybolt Universal seconds at 210º F.
