            HCHO is produced by passing CO, H2, and H2O vapor over a contact substance at a temperature of 240º-350º.  Suitable contact substances are unburned porcelain, pumice, asbestos, coke, or charcoal, preferably coated with a metallic deposit of Cu and Ni.
