            Catalyst such as AlCl3 or BF3 is used for the polymerization of a gas, such as one formed by reaction of CO with H2, containing over 30% of gaseous olefins with a preponderating proportion of butylenes and amylenes, and the polymerization product is subjected to hydrogenation and to treatment with superheated steam in the presence of a caustic alkali to produce an insulating oil.
