Describes arrangement of apparatus and a process for producing C₂H₄, which comprises cracking saturated hydrocarbons such as C₃H₈to form a substantial amount of C₂H₄, removing from the cracked product any compounds containing triple C linkages and also substances liquid under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure, treating the remaining gases containing C₂H₄ together with higher olefins with an ammoniacal cuprous salt solution, thereby separating the olefins from the gases, expelling the olefins from the solution and then separating them by distillation into C₂H₄and higher olefins, passing the higher olefins, together with the part of the gases not having been absorbed by the amoniacal cuprous salt solution at an elevated temperature over a hydrogenating catalyst and subjecting the hydrogenated gas after removal of CH₄, if any is present, again to cracking to form a substantial amount of C₂H₄.
