Gas rich in CH₄ such as natural gas is mixed with steam, and the mixture is passed over a ferriferons catalyst in a 1^st apparatus to produce H₂ and CO₂: another portion of the original CH₄-containing gas is treated with a gas rich in O₂ and the mixture is heated in a 2d apparatus to produce CO and H₂, and the products formed in the 2d apparatus are utilized for reducing and heating the catalyst material in the 1^st apparatus.
