Oxo synthesis is carried out in at least 2 stages.  Fresh synthesis gas containing a major molecular amount of CO and a minor molecular amount of H2 is supplied to the 1st stage along with the reactant containing the ethylenic linkage, and the unreacted synthesis gas is continuously recycled in this stage.  H2, substantially free of CO, is supplied to the last stage and unreacted hydrogenating gas is recycled to this stage.  Enough recycle gas from the last stage is continuously transferred to the gas stream and recycled to the 1st stage to maintain the ratio CO : H2=1 : 1 or above.  Any gas vented is from the recycle gas in the 1st stage.  5 United States patents cited.
