            Coal, hydrocarbons, or C are hydrogenated by the action of an electric arc or sparks from a condenser discharge between electrodes immersed in a solvent for the products.  One electrode is made of, or contains, a catalytically active metal such as Ni or contains a salt such as NiCO3, which becomes dispersed in the liquid.  Gives examples of the hydrogenation of coal and water gas.
