CO and H2 are contacted with a synthesis catalyst under synthesis conditions, which comprise employing a finely divided catalyst maintained in a suspended, dense phase liquidlike condition in the synthesis zone, by introducing the CO-H2 mixture at the base of the zone and passing gases upward therein at a low velocity, separating unreacted gases and reaction products form the suspended catalyst and removing untreated gases and light, normally gaseous products from the heavier reaction products.
