      897.  GUNNESS, R. C.  (Standard Oil Co.).  Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  Canadian Patent 475,545.  July 24, 1951:  Appl. filed July 25. 1947.  Serial No. 562,236, in the United States Apr. 24. 1941: 4 claims.

Method of converting low molecular weight hydrocarbon gases into hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight, which comprises mixing the hydrocarbon gases with CO2, recycled gas from the synthesis gas, and steam in such proportions as to provide an atomic proportion of H, C, and O of about 4 : 1 : 1, contacting the mixture with a reforming catalyst at a sufficiently high temperature and for a sufficient time to convert the mixture chiefly into H2 and CO whereby a make gas is produced having a H2 : CO ratio of about 2 : 1, suspending a synthesis catalyst in the make gas, maintaining the temperature of the catalyst suspension at a level in the approximate range 225º-425º F. and substantially constant and uniform by directly admixing relatively cool materials with the mixture in a synthesis zone, continuing the contact of make gas with suspended catalyst in the synthesis zone for a period of time sufficient to effect synthesis, then separating suspended catalyst from the gases and reaction products, separating unreacted gases and low molecular weight hydrocarbon gases from high-molecular-weight reaction products, and recycling the unreacted gases and low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon gases to the mixing step.
