Process for treating S-containing gas mixtures containing CO and H₂ is given to facilitate subsequent removal of S by alkali and to decrease the proportion of CO. The mixture is suitable for the synthesis of Hydrocarbons by passing the gas at a temperature of 400º-600º in admixture with H₂O vapor, over a mixture of ferric and Zn oxides.
