            Metallic composition suitable as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of  C compounds comprises a porous structure of an oxide of 1 heavy metal such as cuprous oxide permeated with an supporting the oxide of another heavy metal such as Co oxide having a higher affinity for O2.  A mixture of the 2 in substantially equal proportions is heated to sintering and then reduced in a stream of water gas at about 350º.  Such a catalyst is suitable for hydrogenating CO to hydrocarbons.
