      878.  GRESHAM, W. F., Brooks, R. E., AND DU PONT DE NEMOURS.  E. I., & CO.  Catalytic Production of Aldehydes.  Acetals and Alcohols.  British Patent 637,999.  May 31, 1950.  Chem. Abs., vol. 44. 1950, p. 9473.

CO, Ni, and Fe carbonyls are effective and recoverable catalysts for the liquid-phase reaction of an olefin, CO and H2.  Ketones are inhibited at pressures >375  atm., and the products are mainly aldehydes.  H2, CO, and C2H4 in a molar ratio 1 : 2 : 1 led through a CU-lined tube concurrently with 2% Co carbonyl in xylene at 140º and 700 atm. gave 48.5% conversion of C2H4; yield of propionaldehyde 3.15 lb. per. hr. per ft.3.
