      877.  ------.  [GRESHAM, W. F., BROOKS, R. E. AND BRUNER, W. M.]  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Synthesis of Aldehydes.  United States Patent 2,437,600.  Mar. 9, 1948: appl. filed June 7, 1945.  Serial No. 598,208: 11 claims (Cl. 260-604).  Chem. Abs., vol. 42. 1948. p. 4196.

Describes process for the synthesis, particularly of saturated and unsaturated aldehydes, by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon having 2-8 C atoms per molecule and containing a nnbenzenoid olefinic unsaturation with CO and H2.  The initial molal ratio of CO: H2 is about 1 : 1.5-1 : 10, at 75º-250º and 325-3,000 atm.  A hydrogenation catalyst such as Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, and Ru, and their mixtures and compounds, in combination with inert substances such as kieselguhr or the like or with promoters such as ThO2, Mn, etc., is used.  The effect of pressure in selectively favoring aldehyde formation is very pronounced at the above molal ratios, yields of aldehydes as high as 70-100% being obtained under the above conditions.
