Aromatic aldehydes (I) are obtained by the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with CO in the presence of a BF₃-HF catalyst at -80º to 50º under superatmospheric pressure. The catalyst can be recovered and reused. (I) may be oxidized to aromatic carboxylic acids. (I) include BzH. p-MeC₆H₄CHO, 2,4-, 2,5-Me₂-C₆H₃CHO, 2,4,6-MeC₆H₂CHO, p-PhC₆H₄CHO, and 1-C₁₀H₇CHO.
