            Aromatic aldehydes (I) are obtained by the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with CO in the presence of a BF3-HF catalyst at -80º to 50º under superatmospheric pressure.  The catalyst can be recovered and reused.  (I) may be oxidized to aromatic carboxylic acids.  (I) include BzH. p-MeC6H4CHO, 2,4-, 2,5-Me2-C6H3CHO, 2,4,6-MeC6H2CHO, p-PhC6H4CHO, and 1-C10H7CHO.
