      874.  GRESHAM, W. F., AND SCHWEITZER, C. E.  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Preparation of Polyfunctional Compounds.  United States Patent 2,534,018.  Dec. 12, 1950: appl. filed Aug. 11. 1949.  Serial No. 109,802: 7 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

            Polyfunctinal O-containing organic compounds are prepared by reacting a CO or CO2 and H2 in presence of CO fluoride in aqueous or alcoholic medium at 150º-400º C.  The reaction is nCO+(N+1)H2=H(CHOC)-nH.  n being an integer greater than 1.  Pressure is 2,000-5,000 atm.  Either vapor or liquid phase may be used.  The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an esterfying reactant, such as acetic acid, whereby esterfication of the hydroxyl groups in the compound, H(CHOH)nH can occur, at least in part.  5 United States patents cited.
