      866.  ------.  [GREESHAM, W. F., AND BROOKS, R. E.]  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Production of Ketones From Secondary Alcohols, Olefins, and Carbon Monoxide.  United States Patent 2,526,742, Oct. 24, 1950: appl. filed Dec. 20, 1945, Serial No. 636,262; 14 claims (Cl. 260-586).  Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 2017.

Saturated secondary alcohols and olefins are treated with CO in the presence of Co catalysts (reduced Co oxide hydrogenation catalyst and Co salts of carboxylic acids) at pressures >about 50 atm. at 100º-500º, preferably 225º-300º.  Thus, 150 gm. iso-PrOH, 10 gm. Co propionate, and 14 gm. C2H4 heated 30 min. to 250º-261º under 625-755 atm. CO gave Me2CO and Et2CO: addition of reduced Co oxide gave almost 100% conversion.
