      865.  ------.  [GREESHAM, W. F., AND BROOKS, R. E.]  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Production of Esters From Olefinic Compounds, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen, and Organic Carboxylic Acids.  United States Patent 2,549,455.  Apr. 17, 1951: appl. filed Jan. 28. 1948.  Serial No. 4,935: 13 claims (Cl. 260-488).

Object of the process is to direct the Oxo reaction between olefinic compounds, , CO, H2, and organic carboxylic acids to the formation of esters exclusively, while suppressing the formation of aldehydes, ketones, and other O-containing organic compounds.  The process comprises reacting CO and H2 simultaneously with an olefin hydrocarbon and a saturated organic carboxylic acid at temperature 140º-375º and pressure 325-5,000 atm. in the presence of a catalyst containing a Co or Ru salt dissolved in the reaction mixture, the mol. ratio of CO : H2=1:3 to 3:1.  Any olefin hydrocarbon containing 2-20 or more C atoms per molecule and any saturated organic carboxylic acid may be employed.
