In the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, acrolein (I) was produced directly from CO, H2, and vinyl compounds of the type ROCH : CH2, where R is an acyl radical, in accordance with the following equation: CH2:CHOR+CO+H2→I+ROH.  For example.  a mixture containing 137.6 gm. CH2 : CHOAc (II). 20 gm. of reduced sintered CoO catalyst, and 1 gm. hydroquinone was heated to 78º-92º for 1 hr. at 200-310 atm., with an equimolecular mixture (III) of CO and H3.  The resulting product contained (I) (27% conversion) and MeCH(OAc)CHO (IV) (20% conversion).
