      856.  ------.  [GRESHAM, W. F.]  E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Process for Preparing High-Molecular-Weight Hydrocarbons.  United States Patent 2,632,014.  Mar. 17, 1953: appl. filed Nov. 3. 1951, Serial No. 254,804; 3 claims (Cl. 260-449).

Polymethylenes are prepared by introducing H2, CO, and H2O into a reaction vessel.  The mol. ratio of CO : H2 is initially >1 : 1 and preferably 2 : 1-12.5 :1/  The reactants are heated in presence of a Ru-containing catalyst and an acidic reagent (maintaining a pH < 2) at a pressure of 200-800 atm. and a temperature of 180º-225º C.  The polymethylenes have m. p. 126º-129º C. and inherent viscosities of 0.33-0.36, measured at 0.25% concentration in tetrahydronaphthalene at 125º C.  1 United States patent cited.
