      853.  ------.  [GRESHAM, W. F.]  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Organic Oxygen-Containing Compounds.  United States Patent 2,462,738.  Feb. 22. 1949.  Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949. p. 5035.

MeOH with CO at 200º-300º under 200-1,500 atm. pressure gives AcOMe.  Co(OAc)2 serves as the catalyst.  Small amounts of H2 increase the reaction rate.  MeOH 64, Co(OAc)25, and H2O 72 parts, heated in a Ag-lined shaker tube under 600-710 atm. CO at 220º, gave 7% conversion to MeOAc in 0.5 hr.  When a mixture of H2 and CO in the ratio 1:3 was used the conversion was 25% in 0.5 hr.  When a mixture of H2 and CO in the ratio 1:3 was used the conversion was 25% in 0.5 hr.
