      851.  ------.  [GRESHAM, W. F.]  (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.).  Ether Esters.  United States Patent 2,449,471, Sept. 14, 1948.  Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949, p. 1055.

Ketenes and ortho aliphatic carboxylic acid esters react to form dialkoxy monocarboxylic acid esters of the formula (RO)2CR3CXYCO2R, where R is alkyl or aryl and R’, X, and Y are H, alkyl, or aryl.  The ketene is passed into the ortho ester at -80º to 150º, using an acid or Friedel-Crafts-type catalyst.  Thus, ketene is bubbled 1.5 hr. into 33.2 gm. HC(OEt)3 and 0.9 gm. BF3 with stirring at 0ºº, 2 gm. NaHCO3 added, the mixture filtered and the filtrate distilled from 1 gm. NaHCO3, giving 21.9 gm. Et β. β-diethoxy-proprionate, b1.558.5º. n25D1.4088.
