      828.  GOROWSKI, E. J., AND NELSON, K. J.  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Gasification of Carbonaceous Solids.  United States Patent 2,633,416. Mar. 31, 1953: appl. filed Dec. 3. 1947. Serial No. 789,424; 6 claims (Cl. 48-203).  Chem. Abs., vol. 47. 1953, p. 6122.

Synthesis gas is produced from coal, steam, and O2 in a multistage, fluidized-bed process.  The crushed coal is conveyed at a pressure of 30-500 p. s. i. to the preheater, where it is heated with product gas to 250º-300º F. in the upper section and to 500º-700º in the lower section.  The preheated coal is then partly carbonized in the generator at 1,700º F. with steam and O2.  The residue passes to a furnace for generation of the steam.  The product gas reheats the steam to 1,550º F. and the O2 to 800º F., then passes to the coal preheater.
