      788.  GEISSLER, --  (I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.).  [Process for Obtaining Organic Compounds.]  German Patent Appl. I 76,503. OZ 14,523 filed Dec. 21, 1943 (Cl. IV d-12 o).  TOM Reel 23, item 15, frames 183-185: Meyer Transl. PC-S-II, Fischer-Tropsch, vol. 5, chap 150, 1949, p. 18.

In separating organic compounds, such as alcohols, ketones, and the like, from their mixture with hydrocarbons by treating the mixture in a liquid or dissolved condition with adsorbing substances such as active gels, the adsorbed organic compounds are removed with H2O or aqueous mixtures instead of with solvents.  Example: 12 parts, by weight, of a fraction of a product, b. 180º-230º, obtained by the hydrogenation of CO and containing 40% of alcohols besides hydrocarbons, diluted with double the amount of petroleum ether, and brought into contact with 25 parts, by weight, of a wide-pored silica gel.  The gel is washed with petroleum ether to remove the hydrocarbons and shaken well several times with cold H2O.  An oily layer is formed with the H2O, which when dried contains 3.1 parts, be weight, of a product containly 97% alcohol.
