Synthesis gas is produced by reaction of carbonaceous reactant with O₂. A stream of the O₂-containing gas is charged to the reaction zone. A stream of carbonaceous reactant is charged to the reaction zone annularly about the O₂ stream to surround the O₂ stream. The carbonaceous material is in sufficient amount to react with all of the O₂ with formation of completely oxidized reaction products. An additional stream of carbonaceous reactant is charged to the reaction zone into intimate contact with reaction products immediately following their formation.
