Carbonaceous solid fuel is subjected at elevated temperature to the action of H₂O vapor with production of H₂ and CO. The H₂ is diffused through a permeable wall of gasification zone and subjected to combustion in the vicinity of the exterior or effusion surface so as to heat the wall to a high temperature. The heat is transmitted from the diffusion wall to the reactants in the gasification zone to supply part of the heat for the endothermic reaction.
