      771.  GARBO, P. W., AND RIBLETT, E. W.  (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.).  Stagewise Process for the Hydrogenation of Carbon Monoxide.  United States Patent 2,567,932.  Sept. 18, 1951; appl. filed Apr. 30, 1948, Serial No. 24,124; 14 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

Synthesis gas containing a particulate Fe catalyst is passed through the 1st reaction zone under about 1,000º-1,250º F. and a short residence time of about 0.1-1 sec., so that substantially all of the CO is converted to CH2 groups, and then through the 2d larger reaction zone at a temperature about 300º less than before and with a considerably longer reaction time to effect polymerization of the generated CH2 groups to organic compounds.  The catalyst passes through the 2d reaction zone as a dense fluidized mass and is then withdrawn, separated from the reaction products, and returned to the 1st zone.
