      766.  GARBO, P. W.  (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.).  Generator of Synthesis Gas.  United States Patent 2,520,925.  Sept. 5, 1950: appl. filed Jan. 22, 1947.  Serial No. 723,547: 11 claims (Cl. 48-212).  Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950. p. 11,069.

Reaction zone of the generator comprises several concentric tubes of porous material, such as ZrO2, MgO, or alundum, capable of being formed into rigid shapes.  The gaseous reactants are fed separately into adjacent sections: the O2 of high purity (80-95%) is preheated to 600º F. and the hydrocarbon stream at 1,000º F.  A pressure difference of 10-40 p. s. i. is maintained while the feed gases pass under 200-300 p. s. i. pressure.  The porous barrier may be impregnated with a catalyst, such as NiO, ThO2, or SrO.  To remove C deposition in pores, the feed gases are switched periodically into alternate sections.
